Here we are in October!  Of course, October in an even year means we’re in an election year.  That is important for letter carriers from two directions.  In Michigan we are not affected by the administration’s efforts to change vote by mail for 2026.  That means we’re in the same old grind.  Political mail at our cases every morning and election mail moving in the mail stream.  Please be sure that you take care of both – and if management asks you to do something that doesn’t seem right, get your union involved.  A steward may not be able to fix the issue you’re dealing with right at that moment, but forwarding the situation to your branch leadership, and in turn the NBA’s office, is an important part of getting things solved.

      The second direction is a little less obvious.  We need to vote.  Do a little looking beyond the commercials on TV or the internet.  You received your state newsletter around September 25.  The entire issue is devoted to the election, with articles written by your letter carrier congressional liaisons and state board members.  As state president, I will be voting on who will support letter carriers.  No matter what issue you find most important to you, our system of government counts on you determining what’s important, finding out who will support your views, and voting for that candidate.  Please do so.  If you’re an absent voter, you already have your ballot.  Fill it out TODAY and send it in.  Use the mail.  Each ballot we take to a city clerk results in between $1.50 and $2.00 revenue for the USPS.  That’s money that will eventually end up back in our pockets in wages and benefits.  If you’re not an absent voter, early voting will start in the last week of October at your city/township clerk’s office, and of course, polls will be open around the state on November 3rd.

      Finally, a reminder that we are currently electing our national union leadership right now.  Your ballots were delivered last week.  They’re due in New York by Monday, October 19.  Please fill it out and mail it in time to arrive.
